This is the End (2013)

 “I don't wanna die at James Franco's house.”

            This is the End is such a guy movie. The only reason I went see this horrid thing was because my fourteen year old brother wanted to see it since all his friends had and he paid for my ticket. It started off alright and then as the story progressed it got annoying and old. All the actors are playing exaggerated versions of themselves and if these are truly exaggerated versions of themselves I would not want to meet any of them they all seems like outrageously annoying and awful people to be with.

            It starts off with Jay Baruchel visiting Seth Rogen in LA for a few days. Jay does not like a handful of Seth’s friends and is completely not happy when he is dragged to a party at James Franco’s house. A ton of celebs are at the house.

            Jay and Seth walk downtown to go pick up some cigarettes when all the sudden lights shine down and drag people away and the ground shakes and fires start. They get back to James’s house and nothing seems to have happened there. All the sudden the house starts to shake and everyone runs outside. A giant hole opens in the ground and pretty much the entire party gets sucks into it. Only Seth, Jay, Craig Robinson, James, and Danny McBride are left. They barricade the house with whatever they can find and plan to stay there until everything blows over.

            Of course this does not go to plan and some of the guys wind up dying.

            The only guys I could take out of the cats were Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, and Craig Robinson. They were the only ones that were not annoying and were actually funny. Jonah Hill I despise with a passion. I hate seeing his face and I do not think he is funny whatsoever. James Franco’s exaggeration of himself was terrible he looked like an asshole and acted like one. I guess that was the point of his exaggeration. Danny McBride I find funny for like five minutes and then I cannot stand him.

            The cameos were the only saving grace of this movie. Emma Watson had the funniest scenes. She survived the apocalypse that happened. She threatens the guys with an axe and steals all their drinks. I was dying listening to her drop f-bombs. My absolute favorite parts were when Rhianna punches Michael Cera in the face and when he dies. He is another one I cannot stand at all he annoys me to absolutely no end. At the end the Backstreet Boys show up and sing and dance to “Everybody Backstreet’s Back.” The ten year old fan girl inside me freaked out so bad when I saw them!

        I also liked how they all got bored and made Pineapple Express 2. That was hilarious they had their costumes on from Pineapple Express. 

            I am very happy I did not spend my own money to see This is the End. I did not mind the crude humor at all I am used to that with three younger brothers. There is no plot to the story, it is not funny, and it is really slow. If you like all the actors in it go ahead and see it but I honestly suggest not wasting your money to see This is the End in theaters. Wait until it comes on Nextflix to see it for free. 

21 Jump Street (2012)

“Down on Jump Street. 37 Jump Street... wait, that doesn't sound right.”

21 Jump Street was a movie I never really intended on seeing. First off it is a take on an old Johnny Depp TV show and two things are wrong with it already- it is a remake or excuse me a “reboot” and it is of something Johnny Depp was in. Second Jonah Hill is in the movie and I do not find him funny at all.  I only watched it today because it was my brother’s birthday and he wanted me to watch it with him and the rest of our family. Never let it be said that I am a bad sister.

            So pretty much Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are idiot big headed cops. They went to high school together where Tatum was the popular jock who was dumb as a stick and Hill was a nerd who was trying to look like Eminem. After school they went into the police force together and became friends. Instead of being put on the tough beats where they think they will be taking down criminals they are put on bike duty in a park. They see some gangsters smoking pot in the park, chase after them, but Tatum does not know the rights and the guy gets out of jail. The head of the department sends them to 21 Jump Street to work undercover as high school kids to bust a drug ring. Hill and Tatum face high school again each learning something about themselves and learning new things.

            Blah blah blah blah blah. And yes they get the bad guy who was right under our damn noses the whole time.

            Now I appreciate dirty humor some of my favorite comedy movies have some of the dirtiest humor ever but I did not find 21 Jump Street funny at all (alright well there was a funny scene at the end of the movie that I was like crying at but that was it). I HATE comedies that deal with high school, they are so unbelievable and stupid and this was one of them. The acting sucked beyond measure too. I really cannot stand Jonah Hill the guy is not funny whatsoever I try my hardest to avoid any movie he is in. Channing Tatum is excellent eye candy and I have seen him in other movies so I did not find him bad I actually found him funny and the only one that was.

            21 Jump Street is good for one viewing if you are really dying to see it. With movies like this I do not think I wasted my time because now I can have an opinion on it and my opinion is that it sucked. New comedies to me are just so not funny they try too hard to be funny and they just come out crude and ridiculous.

 

Megamind

            Megamind is one of the best animated, what to call it… action movie? Super hero movie? Comedy movie? Well is it all four genres with a little twist.

            Will Ferrell excellently plays the “evil” Megamind bent on destroying Metro City and its superhero Metroman. When he finally gets rid of Metroman once and for all he takes over the city. A while later he becomes board having no one to fight with so he decides to create a new super hero called Tighten. Only things do not go over so smoothly for the new hero so with the help of feisty and sassy TV reporter Roxanne Ritchie Megamind changes sides and helps to rid the city of Tighten.

            This was a really great spin on super hero movies. I enjoyed Megamind from beginning to end. Will Ferrell always goes a bit over the top in his movies but it worked here very well. Megamind likes to be a bad guy who makes very theatrical introductions and is very dramatic. Tina Fey is as always nothing short of a snarky, sarcastic, biting genius when it comes to comedy and was utterly perfect as Roxanne. She had so many lines that I could picture Liz Lemmon saying on 30 Rock haha. David Cross always has be laughing in whatever he happens to be in. He was the voice of Megamind’s assistant Minion who is part fish part gorilla and part robot. Jonah Hill as usual plays the awkward nerd Hal who turns into Tighten. Hal has a massive crush on Roxanne and thinks that by becoming a super hero she will like him but nothing in life goes exactly as planned even in animated movies. Brad Pit… who wouldn’t want to see him as a super hero even if it was just his voice.

            Megamind is a really entertaining and very different super hero story. I liked the twist and turns the story threw. Megamind is a character that you root for and cannot help but love. This movie will keep you hooked and happy and hoping more movies- not just animated- come out this in the future.
